Controversyand emotion dominate the debate over home birth versus hospital birth, withstrong opinions on both sides (Nieuwenhuijze, M. & Low, L.K., 2013). Somehome birth proponents, such as Alexis Chmell (2012), suggest that physiciansactively discourage women against choosing to give birth at home and a womanshould have the freedom to make an informed choice. Others, such as theAmerican Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (American Congress of Obstetriciansand Gynecologists, 2011) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (Watterberg,2013) contend that, regardless of risk assessment, hospitals are the safestplace for childbirth.
